From Guy Crittenden, Editor of Hazmatmag.com His Bon Voyage Article, A Must Read!

Three things to watch and ponder as 2014 ends

This will not only be my final online article (blog) for 2014 (I’m about to go on holiday) but my last article written as Editor of HazMat Management magazine (and sister publication Solid Waste & Recycling magazine). I notice that I’ve posted almost 400 online articles on this site over the years!

As was announced previously in a news story and a blog entry, I’m moving on to pursue fresh interests and will no longer preside over the day-to-day editing and management of these publications as Editor. (I do plan to write in this space from time to time in future, so I’m not gone completely!)

Naturally I feel a bit wistful as both a 25 year job and the current year comes to an end. Not a lot of people nowadays stay in the same job for a quarter-century. End-of-year articles are popular among journalists, who like to wax philosophical about the year that’s passed and the issues facing the looming New Year.

I’m no exception but will keep this entry brief. Instead of a long article about what transpired in 2014 and what may be ahead, I’m going to offer readers three items that I feel strongly they should watch (or read) that have made a deep impression on me recently; these are “must watch” items for anyone interested in helping our species avoid peril from environmental degradation.

The first is a 30-minute video clip on YouTube that I implore you to watch. Make the time when you have a quiet moment, and share the link with family and friends.

The video assembles different pieces of information about the deteriorating status of things at the destroyed nuclear plant at Fukushima, Japan. I know this sounds depressing but you have an obligation, really, to be aware of conditions there. Note that this is not sensationalized stuff about radiation spreading to the west coast of North America via the oceans. The short documentary focuses instead on the very real and present threat from the hundreds of highly radioactive rods in the destroyed cores of the reactors, as well as things like the storage of contaminated water in hastily-built, rusting containers.

This is serious stuff: the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that wrecked the plant led to an actual meltdown of the reactors — real China Syndrome stuff — as had been assumed would never likely happen in a modern reactor. The situation is exponentially more dire than Chernobyl, as it’s going to be almost impossible in the wrecked buildings to selectively remove the rods for safe containment without having them contact one another and trigger a fire, the consequences of which would be unimaginable. We’re talking mass extinction around the world, especially in the northern hemisphere. Yet most people have forgotten the situation and think of it only as a local Japanese problem. (It’s only a matter of time before another earthquake or tidal wave triggers such an event, and these rods will remain volatile for centuries.)

Here’s the link to that video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mn8XUxVq0g

The next item is a short but good article from The Daily Beast (the online version of Newsweek) about the risks we humans pose to the environment, causing species decline not seen since the last global disaster many millions of years ago. Here’s the link:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/11/30/heed-the-warnings-why-we-re-on-the-brink-of-mass-extinction.html

In case you think I only want to depress you, I offer below a link to a wonderful short talk by the famous lecturer on comparative religion and eastern philosophy and spirituality, Alan Watts. This lecture, deliver in the 1970s, is the best summary I’ve encountered of “the situation” humans find themselves in, in terms of finding meaning in their lives and the related “big questions.” There are many lectures on YouTube from Alan Watts that I encourage you to seek out, as well as my other favourite speaker on these matters, Terence McKenna (not the Canadian historian but rather the social and psychedelic commentator from the USA who, sadly, passed in 1999 at age 54 — the same age I turned in October). This video — only 12 minutes long — will put you “on track” for how to cope with the other chilling items I’ve linked to above.

Here’s the YouTube link:

So, there you go. Merry Christmas everyone! And Happy New Year!

AFP, Sept. 16, 2014: Earthquake rocks Tokyo… Tokyo shook as a strong quake hit Japan, but there was no immediate risk of a tsunami.. the epicentre was believed to be in the south of Ibaraki prefecture… The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.6… the effects of which could be felt in buildings for more than a minute after the initial shaking began… Australian radio broadcaster Jason Morrison experienced the earthquake from a Tokyo high-rise and tweeted as it unfolded… Hotel staff say jolt was “biggest this year”… The operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant… said nothing unusual had been noted at the still-fragile site. An official at the Ibaraki prefectural government said… “We are still checking if the quake could result in damage”…

Asahi Shimbun, Sept. 16, 2014: UPDATE: Quake shakes Tokyo and outlying areas; rail services affected — A relatively strong earthquake rattled Tokyo and the Kanto region around lunchtime on Sept. 16, but there were no immediate reports of major damage… Shinkansen services experienced temporary delays… Intensities of lower 5 on the Japanese scale of 7 were reported in southern Tochigi Prefecture, southern Gunma Prefecture and northern Saitama Prefecture. The quake had an intensity of 4 in central Tokyo and many other areas… The Tokaido Shinkansen Line temporarily stopped service between Tokyo and Odawara in Kanagawa Prefecture.

TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Video Tour (at 18:00 in): Temporary seawall built as a measure against the accompanying tsunami aftershock — “The pile of black knit bags filled with rocks is a temporary sea… a measure against the tsunami that would follow a magnitude 8 scale aftershock, which several experts pointed out will occur in the offshore side of the earthquake center of the Tohoku Pacific Ocean earthquake. 4,700 knit bags of rocks were piled up to a height of approximately 4 meters along the coastline. The seawall will prevent a tsunami from finding its way to the land where the buildings housing the water treatment system are located… The actual tsunami [on 3/11] was approximately 15 meters.”

Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (Norway), 2013 (emphasis added): The massive nuclear leakage into ocean from Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant was observed on March 25th,2011. The transport of leaked radioactive pollutant from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant was simulated… assuming constant and continuous leakage for 20 days (scenario 1) and for one year(scenario 2) starting from March 25th, 2011 and was integrated for 20 years… There is no remarkable difference of transport pathways… for the nuclear waste… The results of the ensembles indicate that the nuclear pollutant for both scenarios transports eastward to eastern Pacific… It takes about 10 to 15 years to reach the coast of East Asia… a realistic sourcefunction is required and atmospheric fallout and role of ocean ecology should also be taken into account, in order to get a more reliable assessment of possible impact of the radioactive leakage on the ocean environment.

Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing CenterProf. Ola Johannessen, University of Bergen Geophysical Institute: Ocean spreading of radioactivity from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan […] The results show that the maximum concentration propagates eastward in the Pacific toward the United States during a 7-year period while the total concentration drops to 1-2% of the source concentration (100%) after 5 years.

Nansen-Zhu International Research Centre, China: Extraordinary earthquake hit Japan and led the nuclear leakage of Japanese Fukushima reactor to the ocean. Dr. Yongqi Gao with colleagues at NERSC and NZC used the numerical model to simulate the propagation of radioactive elements in the ocean. Model system has been used for EU RADARC (Simulation scenarios for potential radioactive spreading in the 21st century from rivers and external sources in the Russian Arctic coastal zone, 2001-2003) and Norwegian Research Council supported project ARC (Arctic Radioactive Contamination, 2004-2006)… results were also cited by the State Council of China.

gmo rice china 263x165 Shock: Genetically Modified Rice Trial Reports 3 Times Higher Leukemia Risk

It appears that an alleged illegal GM rice trial on University students in China has led to an incidence rate of acute leukemia of up to 3 times the normal rate in the country. Following the alleged GM rice trial, it was discovered from the Huazhong Agricultural University that ‘over 10 students now have leukemia within a 4-year period.’

The students claim that:

“When we entered the University, the school required all students to promote genetic modification (GM), upon entering the University, our teacher told us that the rice used by our canteen is GM rice from the university’s experimental base.”

Normally, leukemia among young adults in China is about 2 to 3 cases per 100,000 people. In the case of the students claiming to be fed GMO rice at the University’s base, the rate is at least three times higher. Seven students are on record now as having developed the disease.

These accusations are corroborated by a study conducted by Brazilian researchers, one which showed that Bt toxins found in GM rice are toxic to the blood of mice and cause red blood cells to rupture.

“Hematotoxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis as spore-crystal strains Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, Cry1Ac, or Cry2Aa in Swiss albino mice” suggests there could be a link between Bt toxins and leukemia.

Chen I-wan, an Advisor to the Committee of Disaster History to the China Disaster Prevention Association, suggested Thursday that:

“The Supreme People’s Procuratorate, the Ministry of Public Security, the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) should jointly organize a working team to enter the Huazhong Agricultural University and investigate if Zhang Qi-fa, the chief developer of Chinese GM Bt rice, influenced the University to feed GM Bt rice to the students on a regular basis, and if the fact that the leukemia incidence rate of the students at the Huazhong Agricultural University is about three times the normal incidence rate. And, if this is basically verified, then they should sue those responsible with public prosecution based on “endangering public security by dangerous means!‍””

The University Students’ accusations come on the heels of a CCTV report last month, which revealed that unapproved GMO Rice was discovered in two southern China provinces.

Information That You Really Should Consider Reading…

Fukushima Documentary 2014 HD ☢ Nuclear Exodus: Pandora’s Promise Was A Lie

Summary: Following the unprecedented triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after Japan’s 3/11 earthquake and tsunami, a myriad of far reaching questions has arisen…
What’s the current state of the Fukushima nuclear reactors? How much radiation have they already released? What type of health impacts can we expect? Is our seafood supply safe? And what about the other 435 nuclear reactors around the world, 104 in the US alone – 22 of them the same exact design as those that exploded and melted down in Fukushima, are they safe?
Yet these are not easy questions to get answers to. The mainstream media and the internet are full of conflicting viewpoints & information. For example, UN scientists have already claimed that the health impacts of Fukushima will be negligible and statistically insignificant, which is parroted in CNN’s documentary “Pandora’s Promise”. However independent scientists tell a very different story; they project on the order of a million cancers within the next few decades in Japan alone.
So how does such a massive scientific discrepancy occur?
Nuclear Exodus explores the ties that inexorably bind the nuclear power industry to the military industrial complex, and how the lust for nuclear weapons causes governments to push nuclear power on their citizens, while covering up the true health effects of radiation exposure. It delves deep into the legacy & lessons of Chernobyl, nuclear waste management, nuclear terrorism, & solar flares which could potentially trigger hundreds of nuclear meltdowns across the world – threatening life on Earth as we know it.
But can human civilization truly generate the electricity it needs without nuclear power, especially while reducing our energy dependence on fossil fuels? How far have renewable technologies come in 2014 exactly? And if some cataclysmic disaster did threaten the world, would there be anyway to realistically protect life on Earth? Could Mars actually be a feasible back up planet anytime soon?
These questions and more are explored in great depth during Nuclear Exodus: Pandora’s Promise Was A Lie. (This is version 2.2, the most current and up to date version. It’s been tightened up with some important new facts, plus enhanced audio & visuals!)

Dr. Wolman is a psychiatrist who has been working to raise nuclear consciousness for 50 years. See Nuclear Terror and Psychic Numbing By CAROL WOLMAN, MD http://www.counterpunch.org/wolman12082003

Many people don’t recognize the name Fukushima until they are reminded- This is the nuclear power complex that was hit by the earthquake and tsunami last March. Like most people, I assumed the damage was immediate, not too serious in terms of consequences, and well contained.

US Senator Wyden (D- OR) took the trouble to tour the crippled plant this past April, and was alarmed. He found the damage much worse than he expected, and was especially concerned about the spent fuel rods from reactor #4 sitting in a pool 100 feet above the ground, open to the elements, in an unstable building, in an active earthquake zone.

Since his press release, reports and rumors have been flying around the internet. Some scenarios are pretty dire: an earthquake could topple the spent fuel pool, spilling out the water which keeps the rods cool, leading to an unquenchable fire which would spew out 9 times as much radiation as Chernobyl. Or reactor #2, which has a low level of water and some hydrogen buildup, could explode, again releasing huge amounts of radiation. Either of these scenarios could wipe out life in the Northern hemisphere, or on the entire planet, according to Arne Gunderson, a nuclear engineer who supervised the Three Mile Island cleanup. Many others are issuing similar warnings.

Then there’s concern about coriums, the ultra-hot residue of metal and fuel resulting from a nuclear meltdown. Three of the reactors at Fukushima melted down. The coriums are burrowing down into the earth and could possibly hit a layer of steam or methane that would explode and crack the earth’s mantle.

On the other hand, there are reassurances coming out of Japan and the World Health Organization that the amount of radiation released so far isn’t dangerous to health, and that all the reactors and spent fuel pools at Fukushima are under control and stable.

What to believe? How worried should we be? Here in California, we are directly in the path of winds and ocean currents coming from Japan. Information about the state of the reactors and the level of radiation in various places has been hard to come by. For that reason, I’ve launched a petition http://www.change.org/petitions/senators-boxer-and-feinstein-investigate-the-ongoing-danger-from-the-fukushima-nuclear-reactors

The Fukushima complex is owned by the Toyko Electric Energy Company- TEPCO, which has known associations with the Japanese underworld. TEPCO has conducted few inspections of the facility, and is refusing to allow outsiders to inspect. The plant was recently nationalized by the Japanese government, and has been toured by several ministers, who say that the cleanup is good as far as it goes, but always hedge in some way. We can hope for more transparency and more vigorous efforts to take care of the multiple dangers that are ongoing as the government takes charge.

It’s easy to ignore or deny the ongoing danger from Fukushima, for a number of reasons. Japan experienced a triple catastrophe in March 2011- earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdowns. Since the first two were short-lived. self-limiting events, with recovery from both well under way, it’s easy to put Fukushima into the same category. But unlike an earthquake or tsunami, which wreaks havoc and then is finished and done with, a damaged nuclear facility is like a wounded beast- exceedingly dangerous and hard to control. The aftereffects can last for thousands, even millions of years. But unlike earthquakes and floods, radiation cannot be seen, heard, smelled, experienced directly. The effects of cancer, sterility, birth defects, etc often don’t occur until years later. Without an immediate and tangible threat, it’s easy to push the menace of Fukushima out of our consciousness.

We’ve lived with thermonuclear weapons, thousands of them, perched on top of missiles in a number of countries, on hair trigger alert, for 60 odd years. Despite the bitter animosities among nuclear nations, and the occasional hot wars, these devastating weapons have not been detonated, the feared nuclear holocaust which would wipe out life on earth has not occurred, and so we’ve relaxed our vigilance. We’ve come to trust that our species is able to control the genie which was unleashed in 1945. We don’t pay attention to the radioactive dust emitting deadly alpha particles now blowing around the planet from the use of "depleted" uranium weaponry. Similarly, we’ve embraced nuclear energy, ignoring the omnipresent problem of spent nuclear fuel, for which no good means of disposal has yet been found.

There is enormous, but deeply buried fear associated with nuclear disaster. It affects the very stuff of life, the DNA, the basic genetic code for all living beings- animal, vegetable, bacterial. We all have the image of a mushroom cloud tucked away deep in our brain, with lots of rationalizations for ignoring it, and living as if the threat of annihilation was not ever-present. There is deep despair, psychic numbing, a sense of great helplessness and inability to affect the situation. The science is intimidating, the governments and agencies involved seem out of reach, the media is untrustworthy. So the general public uses the strategy of ignoring the problem.

What can we do to empower ourselves and deal realistically with the ongoing threat posed by the Fukushima nuclear disaster?

First, we must look at the urgency. As the NYT puts it: W hether the chances (of disaster) are small or large, changes should be made quickly because of the magnitude of the potential calamity. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/27/world/asia/concerns-grow-about-spent-fuel-rods-at-damaged-nuclear-plant-in-japan.html?pagewanted=1&_r=2

I highly recommend this article, which presents a balanced overview of the situation.

Secondly, we must mobilize public support to force this quick change. The Japanese government seems more intent on reassuring people than on accelerating the cleanup. This is understandable, given the enormous expense required- estimated at $500 BILLION dollars. Japan should ask for international assistance, especially since the entire planet would be affected by another explosion at Fukushima. This step has not been taken, and international pressure is required to bring it about.

Nuclear disaster affects everyone- the 1% as well as the 99%. It does not discriminate on the basis of skin color, religion, political affiliation, neighborhood, sexual orientation, or any of the other variables which tend to divide people. Unlike the threat of nuclear war, the Fukushima situation is nonpartisan, so that national loyalties and ideologies don’t come into play. This should make it easy for people to unite around the threat from the damaged reactors.

What’s needed is for people to overcome denial and become aware. I recommend several measures:

  1. A simple Geiger counter can be had for under $100. The ability to detect increases in radiation oneself rather than relying on biased government or industry sources is empowering. Every neighborhood should have one.

  2. Information IS available, if one searches for it. http://enenews.com is the best website I’ve found for comprehensive, up to the minute news about Fukushima.

  3. We need to make the situation at Fukushima a priority. There are so many issues demanding our attention these days- ecological, humanitarian, political- that it’s hard to put one ahead of the rest. But the level of threat to all living beings posed by the instability at Fukushima is equivalent to a forest fire almost out of control- it must be attended to, NOW.

  4. We need to overcome the social taboo against discussing nuclear threats, and express our concerns- to our family, friends, neighbors, political representatives.

  5. We need to get together and organize to put pressure on the US govenrment, to pressure the Japanese government, to allow outside supervision and assistance. Meetups, town meetings, other events would be helpful.

  6. An independent, ongoing watchdog group is essential, both to monitor the cleanup and to put out warnings if more problems arise. We need to lobby to make this happen. My petition http://www.change.org/petitions/senators-boxer-and-feinstein-investigate-the-ongoing-danger-from-the-fukushima-nuclear-reactors is addressed to the California senators, since California will be heavily affected by any new disaster at Fukushima. Pressure from the US may be the best way to force Japan to bring in international monitoring and assistance.

We have a choice. We can deny the imminent threat posed by the damaged reactors, or we can unite and work together to demand that all possible measures be taken, as quickly as possible, to defuse the danger.
